Reincarnation – What Do You Believe?

Do You Believe in Reincarnation?

In researching various ancient and modern spiritual texts for my book, Reading Between The Lines, The Hidden Power of Language, I’ve learned there are many different concepts of reincarnation.

Most Eastern religious sects believe the way you conduct yourself in this world determines the physical and spiritual state in which you will return.  Of course we know this as Karma.  The Eastern Karmic philosophy of reincarnation however, can also include a concept known as ‘transmigration’.

imageIn transmigration, your soul can actually go backwards in spiritual AND physical form.

You might come back as a monkey in your next life due to your gregarious and careless nature in this life.  Or you could be advanced to a non-human energy form in the next life if you successfully navigate the challenges in this life.

The Westernized philosophy of reincarnation doesn’t accept the concept of transmigration.  It states that a natural, spiritual evolution forces a continuous climb up the physical ladder.  So once you’ve become a soul occupying a human body, you can’t go backwards.

But Karma still exists and you may experience a physical penalty in the next life as result of your decisions in this life.

You might be forced to undergo several traumatic deaths before you’ve learned a particular lesson.  Or you might return with a physical or mental handicap in your next life because you are physically or mentally abusing someone in this life.

The Rosicrucians believe it takes 144 years for a human soul to reincarnate into another human being.  Recalling my previous post about the number nine, I find this fact quite interesting.

The 144 years is based on certain cycles which must take place prior to the renewal of a human consciousness.

Most Christians don’t believe in reincarnation…
scorpioFollowers of the Zodiac suggest there are twelve lives we must perfect.

You know these as the various signs of the horoscope.  We are doomed to repeat each cycle until we can advance onto the next.  Each represents a higher spiritual plane.

And I was born on the Libra/Scorpio Cusp.

As I ponder these various suppositions, I’m still on the fence as to how exactly it happens.  But I do believe there is a pool of vibrating energy in which we all swim in our various physical forms.

Could the end-goal be to become a tree or a rock?  Their stability and longevity far outlasts the human capacity to exist.  Do we have to always be on an upwards path to higher frequencies of energy?

Can reincarnation offer a path of choice?

  • “Most Christians don’t believe in reincarnation” is a bit of a broad, sweeping statement to use. I consider myself to be a Christian and I have always believed in the concept of reincarnation.

If you’re interested, there is a man named Michael Newton, hypnotherapist and psychologiest, who has written several books on reincarnation and Life Between Lives regression (LBL). LBL is regressing a person to the space of time between each incarnation to learn how we have grown from each life, the groups we study with, the Guides we have, etc. Too much to go into here, but Michael’s work is remarkable and life changing for many. “Journey of Souls” and “Destiny of Souls” are his two most comprehensive books on LBL therapy. I hope you get a chance to read both books; I recommend them to everyone with an interest in spiritual studies. Keep up the great work with your blog – I always find it interesting!

  • Hi Dawn,

You’re right, it is a bit of a sweeping statement, but I’m referring to the ‘official’ view as given by Papal law.

I’d love for you to expand on your beliefs, and thank you for the suggestion to learn more about Michael Newton.

I’ll post a link to a video of him sharing his first experience using hypnotherapy to access past-life regression.

And thank you for the support!

  • Curtis: Thanks for a very good blog post. You might already know that the early Christian church did believe in reincarnation. But it was decided that the people “could not be controlled,” they would not behave, unless threatened with the concept of Hell. So reincarnation was quietly dropped as a sanctioned belief. Also, you might want to check “The Autobiography of a Yogi” (Paramahansa Yogananda) for ideas about some Eastern beliefs. Some do not believe coming back is a punishment. Just a way of working out karma. Which, some believe, is not a way of punishment but more of a cause and effect type of relationship. Again, some believe that we did not move from one species to another during reincarnation, but rather choose, yes, choose, to come back the way we do that we may experience something we haven’t yet experienced in our many, many lives. Neale Donald Walsch holds this view in “Converations with God.” Write on ! Bob

    • Cheers Dr Bob, your research is always of interest! The Rosicrucians certainly believe that once you’ve attained perfection, that wether you return into a physical body is a matter of choice. My next post will consider the ancient Egyptian concept of reincarnation.

  • Just dropping by to say hi. I’ve read Dr. Newton’s books and find the whole subject of reincarnation fascinating. I’d like to comment on your question about an “end-goal” – I don’t believe we have one. Life is energy. Energy never dies. No beginning. No end. And life is what we determine it is by the choices we make. That’s my belief anyway. Glad I stumbled upon your blog.

    • Hi Theresa, Thanks for dropping by! The concept you outline, regarding ever-reproducing energy, is symbolised in the mystical schools by the Ouroborus – the snake eating it’s own tale. I totally agree that we are composed of vibrating energy and also agree that our choices determine our experience of life. The question I proposed was, if there was a goal, or preferred outcome determined by natural evolution, would it be to a higher level of vibrating energy, or to a lower? I look forward to your thoughts…
