So why are over fourteen million people watching a video about the end of the world; prophesied to occur on December 21st, 2012?
Update Feb 2011 – The original video I posted, which had received over 15 million views, has been taken down due to copyright. I found this copy of the same video with over 3 million views…
Is it a fascination with death? I recently posted on the subject of reincarnation, so it was impossible to consider that subject without also considering death.
But in doing some research online, I kept finding this consuming infatuation with doomsday predictions across the internet. I’d like to focus on the Mayan calendar, which was the first reference I’d ever seen to use this date.
I’ve read ‘2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck and ‘The End of Time: The Mayan Prophecies Revisited
by Adrian Gilbert.
Both offer quite a different reading experience, but each highlights the fact that the Mayan calendar ending its count on this date is due to an astronomical alignment of the planets.
The fact the calendar, given to the Maya by the Olmec civilisation, stops on this date does not necessarily mean the world ends, but that an astrological event takes place. This alignment occurs once every 25, 920 years.
Considering the Earth is assumed to be about 4.5 billion years old, this event has happened about 1730 times before, so why the big concern now?
I found this web page from March 2000, talking about the planetary alignment that was about to happen back then, in conjunction with the Sun’s 11 year cycle, and this event could mark the end…we’re still here.
Please check out this well researched blog post by Jim Papp, which gives some true insight into the Mayan long count calendar and I quote from it below:
“Is there something significant we should know about the Winter Solstice date of December 21, 2012? Yes. On this day a rare astronomical and Mayan mythical event occurs. In astronomic terms, the Sun conjuncts the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic.
The Milky Way, as most of us know, extends in a general north-south direction in the night sky. The plane of the ecliptic is the track the Sun, Moon, planets and stars appear to travel in the sky, from east to west. It intersects the Milky Way at a 60 degree angle near the constellation Sagittarius.
The cosmic cross formed by the intersecting Milky Way and plane of the ecliptic was called the Sacred Tree by the Maya. The trunk of the tree, the Axis Mundi, is the Milky Way, and the main branch intersecting the tree is the plane of the ecliptic.
Mythically, at sunrise on December 21, 2012, the Sun – our Father – rises to conjoin the center of the Sacred Tree, the World Tree, the Tree of Life..
This rare astronomical event, foretold in the Mayan creation story of the Hero Twins, and calculated empirically by them, will happen for many of us in our lifetime. The Sun has not conjoined the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic since some 25,800 years ago, long before the Mayans arrived on the scene and long before their predecessors the Olmecs arrived.
What does this mean?
Due to a phenomenon called the precession of the equinoxes, caused by the Earth’s wobble that lasts almost 26,000 years, the apparent location of the Winter Solstice sunrise has been ever so slowly moving toward the Galactic Center.
Precession may be understood by watching a spinning top. Over many revolutions the top will rise and dip on its axis, not unlike how the Earth does over an extremely long period of time.
One complete rise and dip constitutes the cycle of precession.
The Mayans noticed the relative slippage of the positions of stars in the night sky over long periods of observation, indicative of precession, and foretold this great coming attraction. By using an invention called the Long Count, the Mayans fast-forwarded to anchor December 21, 2012 as the end of their Great Cycle and then counted backwards to decide where the calendar would begin.
Thus the Great Cycle we are currently in began on August 11, 3114 B.C. But there’s more.”
Who knows, we may indeed face some calamity in the not-to-distant future, but if you believe in reincarnation, then you shouldn’t worry. If you don’t, then why waste the precious time you do have worrying?
Think, plan and create for the future; but live every day as if it were your last.

Hi Curtis: Thanks once again for great work and interesting topics. There is one thing I “know,” however. Revelation was written for its own time. It was a message written in code to help the Christians of the times survive the times. This has been emphasized over and over in my studies for my profession. Also, I surmise that the cycle of the birth and death of all that is, is built into the common psyche of all humans (archetypes). It is, in my view, the common longing to be able to start over with a fresh, clean slate. After all, all other predictions of the world’s end have not come to pass. Write on! Bob
Hi Bob,
Thank you for your insight!
I was actually quite impressed with the quality and validity of what was covered in these videos.
The video above is only 1 out of 6, and when they go into the details about the biblical Revelations, they include a scholar who exlains that this book was written for their times…not ours.
Check out the entire video series…it’s really well done, but of course a bit of a marketing device for sure.
Venus will transit in June. The great connection between June and December will allow for a stronger People. Perhaps in June 2012 a very large blast of radiation will be deflected somehow through Goddess of Love! By December 2012, our alignment will be complete! We may enter another sphere of influence.
Hi Mar…it’s not a matter of if our ‘sphere of influence” will change…it’s more a question of what will that new influence bring?
Good times ahead… Birthing pangs… Vast amount of information being reveled… Earth over due for catastrophe… AD Calendar incorrect? … Mayan Calendar extremely accurate?
Is that Woman in the sacred tree of life picture, the earth. Giving birth to a new kingdom. An end to the old world and creation of a new as like unto the days of Noah. God promised he would not flood the earth again however he never mentioned anything about up heaving large chunks of land that contain the righteous… and leaving the wicked to burn.
Hi Christopher,
According Linda Shele, a Mayan researcher, this drawing is taken from the Lid of Palenque and the figure in the drawing is known as Lord Pacal, the spiritual ‘first father’ of their culture. He is pictured here ‘falling into the jaws of death’. A translation from the lid uses the term ‘he entered the road’. Linda believes this is a reference to the Milky Way, and that the cross in this picture is symbolic of what’s known by the Maya as the Tree of Life or by the mystics as the axis mundi. The drawing supposedly represents many layers of meaning at once, and communicates different messages depending on your understanding of their symbolism.
I think this whole ‘end of the world’ stuff is made up for people to sell stuff. It’s what everyone was saying for the Y2K thing. Yeh, it didn’t happen.
Hi Edie,
You’re right about the ‘end of world’ hype…we’re both part of it…but you can see from this post the Earth will certainly keep spinning…
