According Linda Shele, a Mayan researcher, this drawing is taken from the Lid of Palenque and the figure in the drawing is known as Lord Pacal, the spiritual &#039;first father&#039; of their culture.  He is pictured here &#039;falling into the jaws of death&#039;. A translation from the lid uses the term &#039;he entered the road&#039;.  Linda believes this is a reference to the Milky Way, and that the cross in this picture is symbolic of what&#039;s known by the Maya as the Tree of Life or by the mystics as the axis mundi.  The drawing supposedly represents many layers of meaning at once, and communicates different messages depending on your understanding of their symbolism.</description>
