Look Before You Leap! – Excerpt from Reading Between the Lines, The Hidden Power of Language

“On the surface this cliché simply suggests we should consider our actions before making a decision.  But consideration for consideration’s sake creates paralysis.  We must offer consideration only until we determine that a specific action is required.

We will now put the phrase into context and begin its dissection.  For those with the eyes to see, a perplexing secret is revealed when we look beyond the obvious.

Let’s work backwards and first consider the definition of the verb ‘Leap’:

Leap, n. 1. The act of leaping, or the space passed by leaping; a jump; a spring; a bound1.

Most people would define a leap as the act of physically jumping.  Though, the word in modern language infers a larger-than-normal jump.

A leap could be a startled response caused by great fear as in, “He leapt from the train just in time!”

Or, in a state of excitement, you might “Leap at the chance!” to be on a TV show.

From a scientific point of view, a ‘quantum leap’ is a paradigm shift which occurs when currently accepted principles are replaced by new insights.

Examples would include the ideas of Copernicus (the Earth revolving around the Sun), Newton (Theory of Gravity) and Einstein (Theory of Relativity).  Their leaps of genius and intuitive observations have changed the world.

moonstepEven Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, differentiated between a “small step for man” and a “giant leap for mankind!”

Thus, a “leap” can represent a major opportunity for change in your life.

Although the term can also bear a negative connotation such as, “He leapt to a conclusion before listening to me.” In this case, an over-reactive neural net made a swift, yet often incorrect, decision.

A Leap of Opportunity

Putting the phrase into its purest context, we’re being told we should look down before we jump.  That makes sense, but there is much more to it.

Most people assume this phrase is reminding them to take notice of the distance they are about to ‘leap over’, or more importantly to consider the distance they would fall if the leap fails to achieve the preferred landing.

The uninitiated consider it an empty cliché which warns us to be prepared for any opportunity we may undertake.

The esoteric meaning starts to take shape when we consider the word ‘Look” and uncover why it is so much richer than a simple cliché!”

In the next part of the chapter we consider the verb ‘look’…from a quantum physics point of view, this is very interesting!  The book will be available soon…
