The Three Gunas – Tamas, Rajas and Sattva – Which Path Are You On?

Tamas, Rajas and Sattva – Which of the Three Gunas Best Describes You?

In Eastern Sanskrit traditions, there are three aspects to our personalities, and we each display all of them at different times in our lives.  It’s believed the source of these gunas is our karmic impressions and lessons we’ve learned in this life.

The Three Gunas are defined as follows:

Tamas – Tamas is a state of inertia.  This existence is full of ignorance, obstruction and boredom.  Those who live in a state of Tamas, are usually completely unaware of their surroundings or the effect their blindness has on others.  They don’t move through life, but stand still and let life pass them by, or worse make life difficult for others through their lack of awareness and engagement.

Rajas – Rajas is the state of constant change and energy.  The world of Western-style business is considered to exist in a state of rajas, because of the continuous desire for expansion, control and wealth.  If you judge someone by the car they drive or the suburb they live in, then you too are in a state of Rajas.

This isn’t necessarily a negative place to be, but one can spend an entire lifetime chasing wealth and status as a means of achieving happiness.  In the end however, you cannot take wealth and status into your next life.

Living Sattva means you are living in unison with the universe.  It allows you to make the right decisions because these decisions are based on deep reflection and self-knowledge.

It should be obvious that the Three Gunas represent three major steps in improving one’s personal and spiritual awareness.  Moving from inertia to frantic energy, and then to focused enlightenment, is certainly an honorable path to follow; a path that requires a courageous mind.

By stepping onto the path of the three gunas, you release that part of yourself which no longer serves you and enhance those parts of yourself which benefit you.
