Do You Find it Difficult to Make Tough Decisions? What is Your Dharma?
No, this is not a post about “Lost”…although it is interesting to ponder their use of this term in that show once you know its roots.
I’m taking the term Dharma from the Bhagavad-Gita (The Song of the Blessed), which is arguably one of the best ancient books, on how to live your life with intention and purpose, of all time.
In it, Prince Arjuna receives a series of lessons and answers to his questions about life from his charioteer, who turns out to be his spiritual Lord Krsna, posing as a soldier.
Prince Arjuna is about to lead his troops into battle against his own kinsmen, and faces an internal ordeal with having to make this decision. He does not see the wisdom in making this choice and begins to falter and doubt his position of leadership.
I’ve never had to send men to war, but recently I’ve had to make some decisions which did impact other’s livelihoods. These decision were somewhat forced by the current economic situation, but none the less they had to be made.
As I struggled with this situation, I harkened back to the lessons taught to Prince Arjuna about his Dharma.
There is no value in despising your situation or the decisions required of you while in that situation.
Your dharma is your responsibility to make decisions, no matter how difficult they may be, because it is your dharma. If you can accept your current state of being, and the responsibilities associated with that position in life as a positive thing instead of a negative thing, you will find these decisions much easier to make and accept.
You may indeed impact others lives….do so with as much honor and compassion as possible, but do not shy away from the difficult decisions…they will come back to haunt you again and again.
Accept your dharma…
Make the wisest decisions you have with the information within your grasp…and take heart in the knowledge of what you learn from each experience.
