Can You Do Anything About Growing Old?
In a previous post I provided a definition of entropy with an image which gives you a visual representation of the concept of entropy.
In another I touched on the effect of entropy on civilization but what about the effect of entropy on you?
Here is entropy as explained by Stephen Hawking in his book, A Brief History of Time:
“..the entropy (degree of disorder of a system) of an isolated system always increases, and that when two systems are joined together, the entropy of the combined system is greater than the sum of the entropies of the individual systems.”
Entropy suggests therefore, that in an isolated system (like the world we live in) we should expect disorder to increase.
Why? Because entropy represents the timeless law of energy going from concentrated to less concentrated. It is the law of equilibrium.
Entropy is why metal rusts and wood rots. Entropy is why we grow old and why every living thing will die one day. That does sound a bit depressing doesn’t it?
However the knowledge of entropy can bring a sense of urgency.
If you want change in your life then there is no better time to start than right now! Give this absolute law of scientific some serious thought. Meditate on it.
The laws of equilibrium impacts you at every moment of every day.
The law of entropy states that the more systems you combine together, the more disorder you can expect to occur. Each of us is a system. If you live with someone then you’re two interacting systems which requires there to be more chaos or uncertainty.
You know how you’ll act in a particular situation, but you never can be sure how someone else will act in that same situation.
That is the chaos I’m referring to. Add more people and you add more chaos.
So what does this increasing disorder mean to you?
Basically, no matter how real and solid your physical world seems to you, it is actually not very stable at all.
In fact, many of the concepts we have thought of as absolute constants, such as the state of the universe, have been recently dashed by new observations.
Astronomers now know the universe is not static; it is expanding. In fact it’s now accepted that not only is it expanding, it is accelerating!
If the universe is expanding at an increasing rate, then entropy infers we will continue to experience more and more disorder in our system.
Entropy is a fundamental aspect off the Second Law of Thermodynamics, but this law of science also accepts that entropy can be defied by adding extra energy!
Again, we will explore this concept in quite a bit of detail in a future post, but at this point I want to you understand that focused observation and expectation are extra energies which can be used to overcome the uncertainty and disorder in your life.
If you think you’re getting old then you’re speeding up the process!
Focus your thoughts on NOT getting old…focus on youth and abundance of energy. Reach back into your youth as often as possible to feel that wonder of life we lose so early in our modern culture.
Expectation is much more powerful than you might imagine. Use its excess energy to invigorate your spirit and train your mind to only expect the best of experiences to come into your life.
