What is it About Time and Personal Development? Why Does it Take Time to Change?

Why does it take time to make any serious changes in your personal development program?

hourglass angleMany of us, who are on a path of personal development, have come to realize that change doesn’t occur quickly, especially if you are attempting to make some of the powerful personal changes I suggest in my book, Reading Between the Lines, The Hidden Power of Language.

To evolve your mind, body or emotional reactions requires some serious internal effort, or it has for me anyway…

One question I ask myself, and get asked all the time, is how long will it take to affect any personal changes you may want to make within yourself?

The short answer is: we are creatures of habit…

Read my post on the peptide/receptor relationship which clearly explains how and why we get addicted to certain chemicals and emotions.

To stop these internal addictions requires a physical and mental evolution, and few of us can evolve instantly.  Back to the question of the specific length of time required for any given change to occur…it’s all about the amount of effort you put into it!

How much time are you willing to invest in achieving whatever change you are attempting to implement?

finishEveryone is seeking immediate transformation, and this is where most “self-help” programs fall over…

If the title of the book is “5 Minutes to Being a Better Person” they fly off the shelves…but if the title is “Invest 3 years to Improve Your Life” no one even gives it a look…

And yet, it’s taken me three years to truly make some fundamental changes within myself, with regards to some of the emotional triggers and reactions I had to work on removing or improving to my satisfaction.

I didn’t set out with a specific timeframe related to what I was trying to achieve, and in fact my initial efforts started well over 8 years ago…

In hindsight, I look backward at my path of personal development, and I’m glad I didn’t set a specific timeframe or goal for these changes to come about, because figuring out what I wanted to change was half the battle in the beginning!

Most inspirational speakers and authors all suggest the same thing…just get started!

Do not waste your life being unhappy with who you are…you can change and evolve if that is your primary focus.  It does take time and effort, but life was not meant to be an easy ride….life is about evolution and personal growth!

Invest time in yourself and your personal development…improvement will occur…it simply happens with effort…as Jim Rohn so well articulated, “Work harder on yourself than on your job.”

Change is within your grasp if you put in the work…and time passes anyway, so why not put it to good use!
