How to Create Your Objective Observer – Step 2

Here is Step Two in Creating Your Objective Observer

In the previous post, I suggested how to get started creating your Objective Observer.

This Objective Observer must be personalized.  Give it a name and learn to recognize its presence when you are reacting out of habit.

If you know you have a habit of yelling at people when things go wrong, you must step in the next time you are about to yell at someone and ask yourself if this reaction is adding value to the situation?

If you are able to successfully stop yourself from yelling, then you have started down the path of personal growth.

If you can’t control yourself to that extent, then remove yourself from the situation for a short period of time.

Take a few moments to contemplate what just happened inside your mind and body.  This is the role of the Objective Observer…

I recently had this exact experience. Without going through all the details, I was presenting in front of an audience recently and went totally blank.

I’d asked someone to be prepared to assist by prompting me should this happen, but when the crucial time arrived, I received no prompt.

So I stood there in front of the group for around 10 seconds, trying to get back on track.

After regaining my composure I was able to finish the talk, but I was so angry and embarrassed that I was physically shaking.

This hadn’t happened to me in quite awhile due to my focus on living a better life while staying in control of my emotions. But on this particular occasion, I lost the plot.

I started to go down the path of ranting and raving to anyone who would listen, then I stopped and realized what was happening to me. The anger peptides were bombarding my cells.

By stepping into the shoes of my Objective Observer, I saw the truth.

Although I was unable to control this emotional demon at the time, I knew it was best for me to just remove myself from the situation.

I would have received praise and support from the group as they realized what had happened, but I also knew that the conversations would just cause me to marinate in the anger peptides.

Discussing the experience would simply keep me in a state of anger, so I removed myself from the situation.

The fact that I was able to disassociate my mind from my physical reaction proved to me that my Objective Observer is gaining strength.

It is important to understand that you now have an alternative to feeling angry, jealous or sad, so you can begin to take control of yourself.
