3 Techniques for Memorizing Scripts – Direct Association Part #2
In yesterday’s post about techniques for memorizing scripts, I focused on how to use direct association to learn how to memorize scripts.
Another way to use direct association works in a similar manner, except you choose a building or park that you know very well, instead of individually assigned, disparate images.
The building or location must have enough rooms, or places to visit, as is required for the script being memorized.
You might choose your 3-bedroom house as the physical construct in your mind, in which you’ll travel from room to room to get access to the lines of text in a sequential order based on how your home is laid out.
To continue with the very simple example in the previous post, “Thank you for attending my book signing. Without an audience, an author is nothing.
My book requires you to become a part of it because it’s about your mind.”
An example might go as follows:
‘thank you’ = front door
‘for attending my book signing’ = living room
‘without an audience’ = kitchen
‘an author is nothing’ = hallway
‘my book requires you’ = son’s room
‘to become a part of it ’= daughters room
‘because it’s about your mind’ = master bedroom
This method is better suited to much longer scripts that may require pages of text, so it seems a bit clunky in this short example, but that’s how it works.
Essentially both methods work under the same basic premise; word association. But each offers the user a slightly different framework as a background container for the text.
For me, both of these methods are intensely, mentally laborious!
My mind simply isn’t wired that way, so I’ve found another method, but it it’s much more subtle and difficult to articulate.
You’ll have to come back tomorrow for memorization technique #3!
