Newbie Blogger Mistake #2
You’ve now decided where to host your site and you’ve either decided on a template, or you’re getting a site designed, so now you’ll need a domain name.
You may have already purchased a domain name and want to put a blog site in a sub-domain, like I did with http://www.curtischappell.com
That was my second mistake.
Mistake #2 – Do not hang a .com/blog sub-domain off of a .com domain as your primary blog domain.
(UpDate: I’ve since learned Google does find and search sub-domains on the root directory.)
Instead, choose a .com domain name as your primary blog site. I should have purchased a second domain like curtischappellblog.com, and found out the hard way, when no search engines seemed to be finding my site, that the common search robots (bots) don’t normally look into sub-domain folders when they index a site.
I researched for hours, and learned you can force bots to search and index pages by using a robots.txt file. You can also keep them from finding pages on your site. Please click here to learn how to work with a robots.txt file: www.robotstxt.org/robotstxt.html.
Anyone with experience working with robots.txt files is welcomed to leave any valuable advice in a comment!
On a separate, but similar subject regarding setting up your blog, there is a debate amongst pro-bloggers about using a hosted blog solution versus hosting the blog yourself, so I am investigating this for a future post.
